This month's question is: “When exporting, there are many different temporary registration plates available. What are the options and when are they permitted?”

There are many types of temporary number plates that can be used for export. However, not all types of number plates are always permitted. Therefore, we have listed the different types below, indicating where they are accepted, how long they are valid for, and whether insurance is included. This will help you make the right choice for the correct temporary number plate.
Dutch export number plate
Accepted / Allowed: EU + most third countries
Purpose of registration certificate: Export from NL to country of destination/re-registration
Validity: Fixed period of 2 weeks, or shorter if the MOT expires within this period.
Extend: No, no possibility
Number plate: NL registration plate on white plate with black letters
Application procedure: A few minutes. Via own export/ED permit or via export service provider
Insurance: The vehicle must be provided with temporary third-party liability cover separately.

one-day license plate
Accepted / Permitted: Netherlands
Purpose of registration certificate: Road transport to RDW inspection station on the day of the inspection appointment.
Validity period: 1 day
Extend: No
Number plate: White plate with black letters
Application procedure: Applications via RDW linked to inspection appointment.
Insurance: Vehicle must be separately provided with temporary third-party liability cover
Available from: RDW

Dutch transit registration plate
Accepted / permitted: EU + most third countries
Purpose of registration certificate: Export of vehicles not registered in the Netherlands
Duration of validity: 2 weeks
Extend: Yes
Number plate: White plate with black letters
Application procedure: 2/3 working days: Vehicle must be inspected at an RDW inspection station after which the registration certificate will be sent.
Insurance: The vehicle must be provided with temporary third-party liability cover separately.
Available via: RDW
Trade plates Netherlands
Accepted / Permitted: Benelux
Purpose of registration certificate: To undertake test drives within the Netherlands and the collection and delivery of vehicles from a company stock within the Benelux
Validity period: As long as the car company has the accreditation
Extension: N/A.
Number plate: Green number plate with black letters
Application procedure: RDW recognition for dealer registration plates
Insurance: Garage policy insurance
Available from: RDW

Dealer plates Germany and other EU countries
Accepted / Allowed: Not allowed in the Netherlands
Purpose of registration certificate: To transport or test drive vehicles from a company stock
Number plate: Varies by country, see different examples below
Risk: Fine in connection with not displaying a valid number plate

German export plates / Zoll plates
Accepted / Permitted: A ZOLL licence plate is permitted for foreign riders who are passing through. For Dutch riders, a ZOLL licence plate is only permitted for driving when importing from Germany to the Netherlands. Other use is not permitted for Dutch riders.
Risk: Fine related to evasion of vehicle tax payments.
Purpose of registration certificate: Transport from Germany to destination country
Period of validity: 7, 15, 30, 60, 90 or 180 days
Insurance: Proof of insurance must be shown for the issuance of ZOLL number plates
License plate: German plate with red section on the right side containing the expiry date
Available through: Foreign authorities

German 5-day registration plates / Short-term plates
Accepted / permitted: In the Netherlands, only permitted when the short-term license plate (Kurzzeit-Kennzeichen) is registered to a German national. If the license plate is registered to any other nationality, this is not permitted.
Risk: Fine for driver regarding not displaying a valid number plate
Purpose of registration certificate: Transport from A to B in Germany
Insurance: Proof of insurance must be provided for the issuance of Kurzzeit-Kennzeichen.
Number plate: German plate with yellow section on the right showing expiry date
Available via: Foreign authorities
