New license plate combination 2024

On Tuesday afternoon, the National Road Administration presented the new license plate combination and issued the first number plate. The new number plates consist of three letters, two digits and end with a letter. The series is expected to last for eight years.

First new number plate

The first registration plate, GBB-01-B, was issued to the Royal Dutch Lifeboat Institution, reports the Dutch Road Traffic Service in a press release. The vehicle, an electric Volvo EX30, will be made available to the volunteer organisation.

Registration combinations that are not used

To prevent words from appearing on number plates, the RDW omits vowels. The letters ‘C’ and ‘Q’ are not used, as they too closely resemble the 0. The ‘D’ and ‘F’ are reserved for mopeds and scooters.

Certain letter combinations are not used on number plates under any circumstances: GVD, KKK, KVT, NSB, PKK, PSV, TBS, SS and SD (not even in combination with 3 letters), PVV, SGP, VVD, FVD and BBB.

History of the number plate

The new series is the eleventh alphanumeric combination for passenger cars. In 1951, the first licence plate combination was issued and consisted of two letters and four numbers. Sixteen years later, in 1967, the subsequent licence plate combination was started. The The penultimate number plate series lasted five years.
