Why an environmental sticker in Germany?

German environmental stickers (Umweltplaketten) are mandatory in many cities with environmental zones to reduce air pollution and improve air quality. Vehicles are classified by emission level, with only cars displaying a green sticker permitted entry.
Diesel cars manufactured before 2006 and older petrol cars are often denied admission. Without a valid sticker, you risk a fine. Before leaving, check whether your car needs an Umweltplakette and order it in time to avoid unnecessary problems.

Umweltzones are only located in urban areas. So if you only use German motorways, you do not need an environmental sticker.

Where to stick the environmental sticker in the car?

You need to stick the environment sticker (from inside the car) at the bottom right of the windscreen. That is on the passenger side. Applying the sticker incorrectly can mean a fine of around 80 euros.

Is my car eligible for an environmental sticker?

We can only supply environmental stickers for Dutch license plates that meet the following conditions:

• Petrol, LPG or hybrid cars that meet exhaust emission standards Euro 2, Euro-3 or Euro-4 (from 01 January 1993)
• Diesel cars complying with exhaust gas standards Euro-4 or Euro-5 (from 1 January 2006) or Euro-3 and subsequently fitted with a particulate filter
• Cars with electric or fuel cell drives – Do you want extra benefits with your electric car? Take a look at E-environment sticker!
• New cars often have high environmental classifications like Euro 5 and Euro 6. You also receive a green sticker with a 4 for this. This is currently the highest class associated with the environmental sticker.

Note: years are general guidelines. In some cases, an older car does already have an engine that meets stricter exhaust standards.
