Why an environmental sticker in Germany?
German environmental stickers (Umweltplaketten) are mandatory in many cities with environmental zones to reduce air pollution and improve air quality. Vehicles are classified by emission level, with only cars displaying a green sticker permitted entry.
Diesel cars manufactured before 2006 and older petrol cars are often denied admission. Without a valid sticker, you risk a fine. Before leaving, check whether your car needs an Umweltplakette and order it in time to avoid unnecessary problems.

Where to stick the environmental sticker in the car?
You need to stick the environment sticker (from inside the car) at the bottom right of the windscreen. That is on the passenger side. Applying the sticker incorrectly can mean a fine of around 80 euros.
Is my car eligible for an environmental sticker?
We can only supply environmental stickers for Dutch license plates that meet the following conditions:
- Petrol, LPG or hybrid cars that meet exhaust emission standards Euro 2, Euro-3 or Euro-4 (from 01 January 1993)
- Diesel cars complying with exhaust gas standards Euro-4 or Euro-5 (from 1 January 2006) or Euro-3 and subsequently fitted with a particulate filter
- Cars with electric or fuel cell drives – Do you want extra benefits with your electric car? Take a look at E-environment sticker!
- New cars often have high environmental classifications like Euro 5 and Euro 6. You also receive a green sticker with a 4 for this. This is currently the highest class associated with the environmental sticker.
Note: years are general guidelines. In some cases, an older car does already have an engine that meets stricter exhaust standards.

How long is a German environmental sticker valid for?
The sticker has no expiry date and remains valid. You only need a new one if your registration number changes, the sticker becomes illegible, or your windscreen is replaced.

Environmental zones are established to improve air quality in cities. By preventing vehicles with excessive emissions from entering, the amount of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide in the air decreases.

Is an environmental sticker mandatory in Germany?
Yes, if you drive through an environmental zone without a valid sticker, you risk a fine of €80. The rules apply to everyone, including foreign number plates. It's better to sort it out properly beforehand than to be faced with an unpleasant surprise along the way.
Where do you put the environmental sticker?
You stick the sticker on the inside of the windscreen, in a clearly visible spot. The most common place is the bottom right (passenger side) so that it doesn't obstruct your view. Please note: once stuck, the sticker cannot be reused, so choose the spot carefully.
You need an environmental sticker in Germany when you enter certain German cities that have an environmental zone.
As soon as you enter an environmental zone, you are required to have the sticker. The zones are recognisable by signs with “Umweltzone” along the road. This applies to everyone, even if you are coming from the Netherlands.
What environmental stickers are there in Germany?
There are three colours: red, yellow, and green. In practice, only the green sticker is still usable. Red and yellow are no longer accepted in any environmental zone. The colour you receive depends on how clean your car is.
For electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, there is also an optional blue E-Plakette. This gives you additional benefits in more and more cities, such as free parking or access to zero-emission zones. Please note: the blue sticker does not replace the green environmental sticker.
