
Ukrainian vehicles must have a Dutch license plate by March 4, 2025
It has been three years since Russian troops invaded Ukraine. During this time, many Ukrainians have come to the Netherlands to escape the war. Have you fled from Ukraine and brought your car to the Netherlands? Please note: by March 4, 2025, your vehicle must have a Dutch license plate. From that date, you will also be required to pay motor vehicle tax.
What do you need to arrange?
- Apply for bpm exemption. You can request an exemption from bpm (tax on passenger cars and motorcycles) from the Dutch Tax Administration.
- Inspection at the RDW. Have your vehicle inspected by the RDW. This is necessary to obtain a Dutch license plate.
- File a bpm declaration. After the inspection, you must file a bpm declaration with the Dutch Tax Administration.
- Get license plates made. Once you have received your registration certificate, you can have license plates made.
- Take out insurance. You must take out Dutch car insurance.
- APK inspection (if required). Is your vehicle older than 3 or 4 years? Then you may need to have an APK inspection done.
- Pay motor vehicle tax (mrb). After registration, you will automatically receive a bill for the mrb.
